Wish for Change: Pilot the first physically-backed and guaranteed Real World Asset (RWA) on Kusama Asset Hub via a partnership with Mattereum and tokenisation of the Auto Fabrica Type 18 motorcycle

Date: 2 December 2025

1. Summary

We propose a partnership with Mattereum to tokenise one of the world’s most iconic motorcycles, an Auto Fabrica Type 18, an official collaboration with BMW Motorrad which is one of only 2 units ever made, as the first physical real world asset (RWA) on Kusama Asset Hub, with legal warranties guaranteed in over 170 countries.

The pilot will bring Mattereum talent, experience and legal tech to Kusama, including smart contracts to Asset Hub with a view to developing a series of innovative RWA projects.

The aim is to give Kusama the ability to launch stable assets alongside Brale issued stablecoins, creating foundations for the creation of a digital native sovereign wealth fund that can gradually build a reserve of hard assets to support the network's valuation over time.

The asset is contributed by Decent Partners (DP) who funded development of the project in 2018, alongside a series of other artistic commissions, investments and initiatives that are slowly making their way into the ecosystem.

2. Approach

  • Integrate Mattereum smart contracts and legal-tech with Kusama AH.
  • Create AF18 digital twin with Mattereum Asset Passport and associated warranties.
  • Establish project organisation on Kreivo.
  • Launch dedicated site/experience with Virto Connect login to bring the project to life.
  • Create limited edition visual assets as claimable artistic drops.
  • Motorcycle availability for future marketing/event initiatives.
  • Media partnerships and outreach.

3. About Mattereum

Mattereum is a pioneering London-based lawtech company founded in 2017 by Vinay Gupta (Ethereum launch coordinator and renowned blockchain futurist see DEVCON 1 talk). It specialises in bridging physical assets and blockchain through legally enforceable Real-World Asset (RWA) tokenisation.

The company’s core innovation is the Mattereum Asset Passport system: a combination of English-law contracts, smart contracts (ERC-721 NFTs for whole assets or ERC-20 for fractional ownership), and on-chain arbitration that makes tokenised physical property - art, cars, wine, gold, real estate, luxury goods - legally binding and resolvable disputes in over 170 jurisdictions worldwide.

By wrapping assets in robust legal wrappers (often via special-purpose vehicles), Mattereum ensures token holders have enforceable ownership rights to the underlying physical item, complete with warranties, insurance triggers, and automated dispute resolution. This eliminates the biggest barrier to RWAs: the gap between on-chain tokens and off-chain legal reality.

Key features and achievements (as of November 2025):

  • Test cases in RWAs (art, collectables, vehicles, commodities).
  • Pioneering regulated, yield-bearing fractional ownership models as regulation allows.
  • Fully MiCA-compliant in the EU; works with top-tier legal firms and auditors.
  • Launched the MATR utility token from Germany under BAFIN for discounted onboarding fees.
  • Partnerships across DeFi, traditional finance and governments.
  • Recognised as the missing legal layer for the RWA sector, often compared to the role VISA played for credit cards or HTTPS for e-commerce.

Led by CEO Vinay Gupta and a team of blockchain veterans, lawyers, and cryptographers, Mattereum positions itself as the infrastructure backbone for the multi-trillion-dollar tokenised asset economy, making physical ownership programmable, liquid, and globally accessible without sacrificing legal certainty.

4. About Auto Fabrica

Auto Fabrica is a renowned British custom motorcycle atelier founded in 2013 by brothers Bujar and Gazmend Muharremi. What started as a passion project in 2011 has evolved into one of the most respected names in bespoke, high-end motorcycle coachbuilding.

The company specialises in creating one-off or extremely limited-run motorcycles that blend minimalist, futuristic (or retro-modern) aesthetics with old school craftsmanship. Their signature style features seamless hand-formed aluminum bodywork, exposed mechanical elements, no visible fasteners, and a perfect harmony of form and function, taking 600–800 hours per build.

All design, prototyping, metalwork, 3D printing, and assembly happens in-house, allowing complete creative control.

Auto Fabrica bikes regularly appear in prestigious publications, galleries and events and they command premium prices among collectors for their art-like quality and rarity. The workshop remains small and design-led, focusing on pushing boundaries while staying true to timeless engineering principles.

Despite Vinay/Mattereum working on one of the best legal frameworks for RWA, they haven't gained much traction in the industry and are, in my eyes, not the right partner that would bring a larger audience to Kusama.
With the Kusama Vision, I'd look forward to proposals that focus more on applicable tech, rather than PR one-offs.

thanks for the comment.

Yes, it is in our eyes the best, and they are also the most thoughtful. Their lack of traction is mostly due to projects chasing short term opportunities. Their lack of adoption is therefore a huge benefit for us, because otherwise we wouldn't have the same time or attention.

With the Kusama Vision, I'd look forward to proposals that focus more on applicable tech, rather than PR one-offs.

This isn't a PR one off, though it obviously does have PR value.

It's part of a long term strategy that is not dependent on KSM holder approval, though its always useful to get feedback and to communicate our plans to holders.

Re 'applicable tech' this is definitively not the issue, what matters more is incentive alignment, sustainable funding and tighter narrative alignment.

Even if 'applicable tech' means some iteration on individuality, there is no tightly bound innovation story that will drive value accrual to the token.

If 'Kusama Vision' is the privacy positioning that W3F announced, then its better to think of that as a desire to see a 'feature set', rather than a Vision. It has no differentiating qualities in that regard.

Participants expressed reservations about the proposal to tokenize the iconic motorcycle as the first real-world asset on the network. They stated that the plan’s path to success and overall feasibility remained unclear given the current conditions and context of industry advancements. One participant remarked that while the experiment might have inherent potential, they preferred to abstain, reflecting uncertainty about its immediate benefits. Overall, the majority expressed doubts and opposition, questioning the project's practical implementation and its likely contribution to network stability and financial foundations, which ultimately led to a decision against the proposal based on its ambiguous prospects.
