"I wonder where all these feathers came from. The clouds, do you think?" — Winnie the Pooh

✨ TL;DR

Feather Protocol is a decentralised, experimental intelligence layer on Kusama, allowing anyone to publish diverse content via system.remarkWithEvent.

It aggregates this into generative zines that evolve into Kreivo-based DAOs on Asset Hub, scalable by emergent teams.

Using Noir zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), Feather ensures privacy and scalability, burns KSM via the incoming Dark Hole pallet, and mitigates spam and offensive content risks through economic and cultural incentives.

Validators gain new economic roles as Akash-style contributors, supporting zine production, storage, and Livepeer-inspired real-time AI transcoding.

No gatekeepers. No permission needed.

Expect Create ChaOS.

🧠 Why Feather?

Kusama’s experimental spirit lacks a platform to amplify its community’s ideas and art. Feather addresses this by:

  • Building an open publication layer for Kusama.
  • Indexing diverse genres with Noir ZKPs for authenticity.
  • Enabling organic meaning-making.
  • Transforming zines into cultural artefacts, enhanced by validator-driven media production and Kreivo DAOs.

Inspired by RMRK’s remark-based NFTs, Feather overcomes scalability issues with Noir and IPFS, harnessing Kusama’s collective creativity.

🤔 Why Is This Good for Kusama?

Feather enriches Kusama’s ecosystem by:

  • Fostering a diverse, unified collective through varied contributions.
  • Unlocking emergent insights from unfiltered input.
  • Reinforcing decentralisation with permissionless system.remarkWithEvent composability.
  • Driving KSM deflation by burning fees in the Dark Hole pallet.
  • Preserving cultural memory via evolving DAO-managed zines.
  • Strengthening community identity with validator-supported media.
  • Pioneering on-chain cognition through DAO governance.

🧩 How It Works

🐤 Publishing

Users submit content using:

FEATHER::<genre>::<optional title>::<content>

Examples:

FEATHER::theory::Onchain Telepathy::All governance is performance art...
FEATHER::dream::Midnight Validator::I dreamt I minted the wind.
FEATHER::log::Parachain Sync Lag::Node fell 300 blocks behind at 3:14AM UTC.
FEATHER::image::Wormhole Diagram::QmX9abc123...

Genres include: theory, rant, poem, image, log, dream, scene, fiction, alert.

Optimisations:

  • IPFS storage for large content, linked by hashes.
  • Noir ZK verification with compact on-chain proofs.
  • Batching via indexers to reduce fees, with burns via the Dark Hole pallet.
  • Rate limits and dynamic fees to deter spam.

📖 Reading

A frontend generates zines from indexed entries:

  • Spanning time or block ranges.
  • Adapting layouts to content type, frequency, and tags.
  • Tracking contributions via wallets, pseudonyms, or ZK proof of personhood.
  • Evolving art/styling via validator compute.
  • Transforming each zine into a Kreivo DAO/media brand, scalable by emergent teams and validators.
  • Offering feeds, threads, timelines, or topical debates.

🌈 The Vision

Feather evolves into:

  • 🪞 A governance sentiment tool (Kreivo DAOs)
  • 🧵 An ecosystem news system scaled by validator teams
  • 🖼️ A collective mindmap, professionally rendered
  • 🧪 A human-machine thought lab
  • 🧬 A scene-based identity framework
  • 🪙 A reward system for insights
  • 🪙 A provenance and licensing system for novel on-chain IP

🛠️ Technical Overview

  • Publishing: system.remarkWithEvent for event-driven posts.
  • Scalability: Noir ZKPs, IPFS, batching, and DAO integration.
  • Indexing: Detects FEATHER:: events, verifies proofs, retrieves content.
  • Frontend: Built with SvelteKit or Next.js.
  • Media: Validators provide Akash-style compute/storage via Kreivo DAOs.

📢 Why system.remarkWithEvent?

  • Emits events for efficient indexing.
  • Reduces overhead vs full-chain scans.
  • Enables private, spam-resistant, and scalable publishing when combined with Noir.

Consideration: The system remark method requires a dedicated intermediary to index remarks for data construction. A pallet with extrinsics could simplify fetching entries via regular RPCs and light clients, potentially enhancing accessibility for users relying on lightweight nodes.

🔐 Scalability with Noir

Noir (Aztec's ZKP language) solves RMRK’s scaling issues by:

  • Verifying remarks off-chain with compact zk-SNARKs.
  • Aggregating data for lower costs.
  • Enabling pseudonymous posts.
  • Securing DAO/validator contributions.
  • Supporting IPFS off-chain content.

🧪 Practical Implementation

  • Remark Verification: Noir circuit checks format and IPFS hash.
  • Rate Limiting: Enforced via private ZK logic (e.g., 10/1000 blocks).
  • DAO Verification: Proves contributor eligibility for governance.
  • Validator Contribution: Verifies compute/storage contributions.
  • On-Chain: pallet-noir-verifier checks proofs, stores minimal data.
  • Indexing: Community-run batch processors.
  • Privacy: Proves validity without revealing identity.

🚀 Path to Implementation

  • Phase 1: Prototype – Noir circuits, frontend, IPFS integration.
  • Phase 2: On-Chain – Pallets, Kreivo integration, validator enablement.
  • Phase 3: Scale – Optimise for high volume and professional teams.

Tools: Noir CLI, Barretenberg, Substrate.

🎨 Media and Economic Opportunities

Validators become Akash-style contributors:

  • Zine Production: GPU-rendered layouts/AI designs.
  • Storage: Scalable, DAO-funded commercial hosting.
  • Streaming: Live events with validator-transcoded video (Livepeer-style).
  • Economics: Paid in KSM/stablecoin, with fee burns.
  • Scalability: Validator teams service global zine projects.
  • Security: Economic viability reinforces validator participation.

🔥 Driving KSM Burning with the Dark Hole Pallet

Feather fuels deflation through:

  • Usage fees (0.01–0.1 KSM per remark) burned.
  • Batching (e.g., 1 KSM burn per 1,000 remarks).
  • Spam deterrents
  • DAO and validator fees add to burns.

⚠️ Risks and Mitigations

  • Noir Rate Limiting: ZK-enforced private limits.
  • DAO Self-Regulation: Anonymous ZK flagging, not removal.
  • IPFS Offloading: Avoids chain bloat.
  • Batching/Monitoring: Reduces load, flags abuse without censorship.

🔮 Call to the Community

We’re looking for:

  • 🧠 Concept contributors
  • ✍️ On-chain authors: poets, builders, memers
  • 👩‍💻 Developers: Noir, UI, pallets, streaming, generative AI
  • 🎨 Designers: visual identity etc.
  • 🐦 Boundary-pushers on Kusama

🌐 Get Involved

  • Submit a FEATHER:: remark via system.remarkWithEvent and dogfood the creation of Feather.
  • Index submitted Feathers in this trial phase and help bring the flock together.
  • Critique the concept, improve things, quit moaning etc.

We have voted Nay on this proposal. We don’t believe that submitting a referendum on this track is the most effective way to achieve your goals.

If the intention was to gather community sentiment, we recommend using more appropriate channels such as voting.opensquare.io (https://voting.opensquare.io/), the Polkadot forum, and social platforms where deeper discussion can take place. These are better suited to building consensus before moving into governance.
