Metaverse and Gaming Fund: Fostering a Cross-Chain Future
Hey there everyone, I recently created a twitter poll with a modest in number, yet strong indication of support on developing a gaming and metaverse fund in the Dotsama ecosystem. I thought it wise to start a conversation on how this may look and how the community can collectively support something like this responsibly and diligently. However, I've run into a few sticking points when discussing this with other community members.
- How will projects be selected?
- Who will monitor progress and will there be a platform where projects submit progress and show how they have used the funds?
- Is this beneficial to Dotsama or pandering to the general sentiment in crypto at the moment?
I think this would benefit the ecosystem no matter what and I envision the fund helping projects that are not necessarily native to one chain such as RMRK. Many individual parachains have avenues for funding, and some have also shown concern for double dipping. I also understand that endorsing one project is not in the best interest of the general ecosystem, but if there was an application process or community vote, this would eliminate the idea of favoritism/selection of certain projects.
In the end, I think announcing a fund like this can help grow the ecosystem in more than just gaming and metaverse type plays. There are many who have chosen to grow the Dotsama ecosystem who have seen the vision from the beginning, but this will only encourage more growth and bring more attention to the ecosystem. This is just the start of a discussion. I know there are many community members who have their own opinions, thoughts and suggestions on the matter, and I hope we can work together to put treasury funds to good use!

So - entirely tangentially, I've been trying to incentivize gaming and metaverse content via my bounties with WagMedia, and I've been pretty surprised at how little content is actually created regarding this - which kind of tells me that either:
-
the community doesn't have interesting gaming and metaverse related stuff to share, which this bounty might be able to help, or,
-
there is very little overlap with the current community and "gamers", who would produce and consume this content to begin with - which honestly seems to be more likely to be the case to me.
In terms of entertainment value of the things we have in our ecosystem, honestly, we don't (yet) have anything that compares to "non-crypto" games and metaverse content - we're on the cusp here though, looking at certain experiences and games that are in dev or about to launch.
So I'd have a request of you anyone involved in this bounty - we need to increase the amount of experiences in our ecosystem that are a counterpoint to what is available in the modern f2p gaming economy - if we can't compete on quality we should compete on values and decentralization, but ideally we outcompete on both - what that means is funding actual indie gamedevs and artists to make actual games and experiences, and helping them build it in a decentralized way with the tech we have available, and not just DeFi with a pretty UX. Again.
I nominate @EAThomson as one potential curator for this effort, he's literally been trying to coordinate the gaming ecosystem in our space for months, if not years now, and he certainly has the connections and priorities to get resources to folks who are working on really high quality experiences.

This is the type of project and idea that fits directly in the scope of what I was personally envisioning. Those with great ideas and potential but who have the need to plug in to a system with the tools to grow said project.
It also hits on another point. What would be the initial scope of projects that could qualify for funding? May be good to have a general idea and then the curators could decide to propose on any projects outside the initial scope with a community poll/vote on chain.
